What microsoft 365 backup actually means
It is one of the most common and dangerous assumptions in business technology: that because your email and files live in Microsoft 365, they are backed up. They are not — at least not in the way you would want. Microsoft keeps the service running; recovering your data after a deletion, a mistake or a compromised account is your responsibility. Microsoft's own agreement recommends a third-party backup.
Retention in Microsoft 365 is short and easy to blow past. A deleted mailbox, a departed employee's files, a folder wiped by ransomware synced across OneDrive — these are routinely unrecoverable once the built-in window closes. By then the damage is permanent.
